Rink Hockey For Dummies
By: Linda McNeel
One of the best kept secrets in the United States is one of the most well known sports in many other parts of the world. It is not a new game, its origins dating back to Persia 4,000 years ago. The U.S. has produced competitive teams in this traditional form of roller hockey since the 1800’s. There were even famous silent film stars, such as Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin, playing on teams in the early 1900’s. Over 60 Countries have Rink Hockey programs.
While the majority of our youth are getting involved in American football and baseball, popular only on our Continent, the majority of European, Latin American and South American youngsters are playing soccer and “Rink Hockey.” In recent years, with the advent of the modern inline roller skate, there has been a form of the game played on the streets, in parks, and arenas in various areas of the Country, but that is NOT the hockey of which I write.
