Rink Hockey For Dummies

By: Linda McNeel

One of the best kept secrets in the United States is one of the most well known sports in many other parts of the world. It is not a new game, its origins dating back to Persia 4,000 years ago. The U.S. has produced competitive teams in this traditional form of roller hockey since the 1800’s. There were even famous silent film stars, such as Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin, playing on teams in the early 1900’s. Over 60 Countries have Rink Hockey programs.

While the majority of our youth are getting involved in American football and baseball, popular only on our Continent, the majority of European, Latin American and South American youngsters are playing soccer and “Rink Hockey.” In recent years, with the advent of the modern inline roller skate, there has been a form of the game played on the streets, in parks, and arenas in various areas of the Country, but that is NOT the hockey of which I write.

USA Rink Hockey | Mens Team USA and Sub-20 Team USA

USA Rink Hockey

2013 Mens Team USA and Sub-20 Team USA
By: Tom Hughes

On Friday afternoon, following the conclusion of the 2013 Rink Hockey National Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, two Men’s Rink Hockey Teams were chosen to represent the United States at two different World Championship Tournaments this year.

The Men’s Team will travel to Angola, Africa on Tuesday, September 17th to participate in the Men’s “A” world Rink Hockey Championships. The competition will take place in two of their major cities, so they can present rink hockey to as many people as possible. Team USA will compete against some of the best Teams in the World to try to capture a Gold Medal. This would be a first for the United States in an “A” Rink Hockey World Championships. We wish them the best in their quest for World Gold.

The Team members that qualified for Men’s Team USA are:
Josh Englund, Shane Enlow, Nic Robinson, Shawn Schmelcher, Dylan Sordahl, Lucas Thompson, Michael Trussell, Richard Trussell; Goalies : Bill Mihay, Troy Sato.

Alternate Goalie: Austin Morhaus; Floor alternates: Scott Ferguson, Holland Elkins. Coach: Jim Trussell, Assistant Coach and Manager: Pat Ferguson.

The Men’s Sub-20 Team will be traveling to Cartagena, Colombia on October 2nd for the Sub 20 Rink Hockey World Championships. They will be under the guidance of a new coach, Brian Moyer. Brian was a member of the U.S. Men’s Team for a number of years, so he has seen and participated in many Tournaments overseas. I think this will be quite helpful with this young Team. His experience and enthusiasm really came through during the tryouts. I wish them the best of luck in their quest for a Gold Medal for the United States.

The qualifying Team members for Sub-20 Team USA are:
Austin Baker, Justin Bradford, Ryan Carney, Alex Chavana, Thomas Dunning, Holland Elkins, Jonathan Glatt, Colby Moyer; Goalies: Ryan Nelson, Nicholas Stauffer, Coach: Brian Moyer, Manager: Scott Ferguson
