Rink Hockey For Dummies

By: Linda McNeel

One of the best kept secrets in the United States is one of the most well known sports in many other parts of the world. It is not a new game, its origins dating back to Persia 4,000 years ago. The U.S. has produced competitive teams in this traditional form of roller hockey since the 1800’s. There were even famous silent film stars, such as Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin, playing on teams in the early 1900’s. Over 60 Countries have Rink Hockey programs.

While the majority of our youth are getting involved in American football and baseball, popular only on our Continent, the majority of European, Latin American and South American youngsters are playing soccer and “Rink Hockey.” In recent years, with the advent of the modern inline roller skate, there has been a form of the game played on the streets, in parks, and arenas in various areas of the Country, but that is NOT the hockey of which I write.

2012 Ladies World Rink Hockey Results

Opening Ceremonies In Recife, Brazil
Due to Wi Fi problems at the hotel and the hustle and bustle of our schedule, I was unable to get the results up for Sunday and Monday. Please bear with me and I will try to do better with more pictures and updates as the days of Finals continue.

The USA Ladies Rink Hockey Team got off to a shaky start Sunday, November 11th with a loss to Chile. Our Ladies seemed a little flat and they couldn't get their act together for their first game. Our offense was non existent and our defense was very lax in the 11-2 loss. Hopefully they will get it together for Argentina on Monday.

Monday against Argentina, the ladies played an almost flawless first half, allowing only one goal by the strong team from South America. They kept it up pretty well in the second half, but with 8 minutes remaining, everything fell apart and Argentina went on a scoring frenzy. We tried to regroup with some of our fresh young players, but the damage had already been done. The final score was 8-1, Argentina.

Tuesday we were not scheduled and Wednesday was a day of rest before Finals. We played Switzerland on Thursday at noon. The ladies held the Swiss ladies to only 3 gaols in the first half, but we were unable to put the ball into their cage. We had more offense in the second half, but were still unable to score, but the Swiss got some lucky shots on cage and won the match 6-0.

Friday, we have a match at noon against England and another at 9:30pm against Uruguay. Good luck Ladies!  GO TEAM USA!!!
